Rodrigo Salazar: A Warrior's Tale, is the engaging story of a young boy growing up in 10th century Spain. His father, a vaunted warrior, was gravely wounded in battle and could no longer provide for his children. As Rodrigo's mother had died earlier, the father took nine-year old Rodrigo to a monastery to be raised in the church, and his younger sister to a nunnery. As a teenager Rodrigo was captured by bandits and sold into slavery. He subsequently escapes, and in making his way to freedom catches the attention of a group of Christian warriors engaged in battle with Muslim raiders. Rodrigo is offered the opportunity to enter into training as a warrior. He accepts, gains the favor of the king when he saves him from a bear attack, and is given a title and land holdings. Young Rodrigo grows into manhood and becomes a valued warrior and land holder for his king, and also the forbidden love interest of the king's daughter, Princess Alexa. I will let you discover for yourself how the tale turns out.

I have had the good fortune of getting to know the author, as we live in the same area. We have talked about military history over coffee at the local beanery, and when he told me the story of Rodrigo Salazar, I hoped the book would be as good as the version he related. It was, in every way. Ballentine has written a story that has enough detail about the period to be historically accurate, without actually writing a historical novel. The characters are well-developed, and you will come to know them as friends. I look forward to reading Dave's next book, whatever that may be about.

A great read and a new adventure set in an area and era not written much about elsewhere. Multiple story lines are well handled and interlaced to make one anxious to continue reading the next chapters. I found the historical detail and description educational. Rodrigo was certainly on the fast track for promotion. Much of this story is still untold and ripe for a sequel. I hope Dave has not run out of ink.
I liked the story line and the writing, but it was LOADED the type of typos that Spell Check won't catch - such as "... his shirt didn't fir right...". at least one of these typos per 2 pages. Does anyone copy read these before they go on line? I was surprised to see this with .
Good story and kept my interest. Seems the styles varied through book. Needs some editing, but i get the gist.
This period of Iberian History has not been of interest to me before reading this book. In honesty, the author was a classmate in high school, so my interest was to see if David excelled in really old history compared to his other book I read about his time as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam Nam. He succeeded. The story of Rodrigo was well written and believable. The descriptions of life, challenges, and growth of a boy to a man were gruesome, yet genuine. Passion towards service lead to his destiny, which included acquiring position, respect, and a compelling life mate.
Don't buy this book unless you are willing to stay up to 2AM reading it. The author obviously had done a lot of research on the this period of history and the conflict between the Moors and Christians. The story is refreshing to read and even though it becomes a love story, there is very little sex or foul language, just a fascinating read. I am looking forward to a sequel to this storyline and other books the author will hopefully write
Most of my past reading of History and Historical Fiction has been after the epoch of the Crusades. So this book was my first venture into the time "when knighthood was in flower" so to speak. I raced through the book quite rapidly and found the story very interesting. The author obviously had done a lot of research not only on the period, but also of animal husbandry, not only involving horses in combat, but also wrote extensively about Falcons, big brown bears and other bird varieties. And he cleverly wove the text about each animal into the story line.

The author also wrote detailed descriptions of the weapons of war, and of the training required to use the bow, the lance, the broad sword and the shield. And in my view, all of this information was most interesting yet didn't get in the way of the plot. The only aspect of this book that I would like to see looking forward, is that the book ended giving me an idea that there should be a sequel to tie up just a couple of loose ends. However, that would not keep me from recommending this book to fans of those early centuries.
If you grew up as I did as a glutton for the historical adventure novels of Robert Louis Stevenson (Kidnapped, Treasure Island) or those non-Sherlock tales by Arthur Conan Doyle (The White Company)you will find this story of a slave boy who fights his way into the nobility of 10th Century Iberia to be a welcome new classic of the genre. On at least two counts, the story of Rodrigo Salazar is more than a rival of the ripping yarns of our youth, it is superior. Author Ballentine knows his medieval Spain with an expert's grasp of the fractured politics of the Christian north and southern Spain where the Muslim Caliph dwelt. He also knows what the disorganized melee of armed combat is like with its sweat, confusion and fear. He weaves both the history and the battle drama seamlessly with a practiced narrative that draws the reader along, informing even as it thrills. What a treat!.
